It wouldn't be the Chao Island Mod if you couldn't play as a Chao! Chao were made playable after Sonic was. Chao progressing stats are a bit tricky to come up with so I decided to make Chao summoners because Chao have a lot of friends and it makes sense that Chao would make it so you have a lot of friends too. Chao are physically the weakest class because of their reduced defense and health, but they make up for it in max minions and summon damage. You don't need to be tanky if you have a lot of friends all around you, beating up all the bad creatures for you! Chao pair up best with other Chao that increase their summoning abilities. By late game, you're going to have a mini horde of minions following you, even without items, and the more summon stats you get, the more friends you have protecting you.
Starter Stats: Chao start with -12 Defense, -25 Health, +1 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating the Eye of Cthulhu: +5 Max Health, +1 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating the Eater Of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu: +5 Max Health, +1 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating Skeletron: +1 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating King Slime: Grants Immunity to Fall Damage, +5 Max Health, +1 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating Queen Bee: +5 Max Health, +2 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating The Destroyer: +5 Max Health, +2 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating The Twins: +2 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating Skeletron Prime: +2 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating Plantera: +2 Max Minions, +10% Minion Knockback and +10% Minion Damage.
After defeating Golem: +2 Max Minions, +15% Minion Knockback and +15% Minion Damage.
After defeating Duke Fishron: Reduces enemy aggression towards you by 400.
After defeating the Lunatic Cultist: +2 Max Minions, +15% Minion Knockback and +15% Minion Damage.
After defeating Moon Lord: +2 Max Minions, +15% Minion Knockback and +15% Minion Damage.

Currently you can obtain a Chao Transformation for free by talking to the Chao Principle.
Additional Information About Chao Transformations
On September 16, 2021, all Chao Transformations (CTs) and their transformation items received a huge revamp to their coloring and pixel placement, after not being updated in a year.
Here's a before and after gif of what all the CTs and their items look like before and after the revamp.
Some Chao and items are missing in certain spots because they didn't exist or weren't in the garden yet and the revamp update adds the Chao that didn't exist yet and their items.
