Chao are adorable pets you can collect and evolve in the Sonic Adventure: Chao Island Mod. Chao aren't just adorable though, many Chao have unique buffs that help you, the player, progress through your journey in Terraria!
Let me tell you about Chao and items!
As you progress through your journey in Terraria, you'll find yourself collecting all kinds of items that you can combine with your Chao eggs. Unfortunately, Chao aren't advanced enough that you can just give them your item directly so you'll have to combine the egg with the eligible item in order to evolve that Chao into a specific species. To do this, you'll have to unequip your Chao egg and combine it with an item, as you would crafting just about any item in Terraria. For the sake of convenience, you won't need a crafting bench to evolve your Chao unless you're making Robot Chao. Let me tell you about Chao and how they can help you! Chao aren't just adorable, they're extremely helpful too! Chao can grant all kinds of buffs ranging from healing to damage increases and more. Chao have a special ability to adapt and absorb anything they're given so whatever you give to your Chao, expect it to have some kind of trait from whatever you gave it! A great example would be giving your Chao cloud fruit and then seeing your Chao evolve into a Cloud Chao, which in turn grants you cloud-like abilities like slow falling, a higher jump and more!
Starting a new Character:
You have to start the mod with a new character in order to get your two default Chao eggs. These default eggs are unobtainable to get again until you defeat Eye of Cthulhu, so choose how and when you evolve them carefully!
Step by step guide on how to evolve your Chao:
Obtain the Chao egg of your choice.
Give your Chao egg to the guide to see what you can evolve it into.
After that, gather all the needed items your Chao will need to evolve.
Make sure the items you need to combine with your Chao egg are in your inventory as well as the Chao egg itself.
Combine them all together and then equip your brand new Chao!
Additional Information About Chao Transformations
On September 16, 2021, all basic Chao and their eggs received a huge revamp to their coloring and pixel placement, after not being updated for a long, long time.

Some Chao and Eggs are missing because they didn't exist yet and the revamp update adds in those non existent Chao and their eggs.
